Thanks to BuddyTV for this information.  American Idol executive producer, Nigel Lythgoe held a conference call today to discuss the upcoming 7th season of American Idol.

Nigel says that they’ve got some excellent individuals in the top 12 this season. He still believes last year as a group was still great, but this season he thinks they have some immediate stand outs in the final group.

They let the contestants play instruments during the Hollywood rounds. He says it worked brilliantly for a few singers, but some others crashed and burned. They’re still talking about whether or not they’ll allow instruments in the top 12. It’s still up in the air.

This season, they’re going to do fewer celebrity judges, and change the editing and everything to make it more about the individual contestants, and showcase them and allow the audience know who exactly these kids are. He talks about blowing up the genres and giving the kids a bigger catalog of songs to work with. There may be some more family screen time.

Nigel says that even if they know a singer is in the top 24 or top 12, that doesn’t mean that they’ll put their audition tapes on air early in the season.

Nigel says that the instruments didn’t sway the judges any way, and that the judges have nothing to do with the show’s production.

Nigel says he’s not into jumping sharks and that the little lull in ratings isn’t going to bother him. Even if Idol lost half of its audience, it’d still be the biggest show on TV.

Nigel assures us that we will see just as many terrible singers in the audition episodes as years past.

Oh and then there’s this part…

Nigel talks at length about each of the six Idol winners. Nothing all that enlightening, save for Lythgoe saying that America maybe made a mistake with Taylor Hicks.

I can honestly say that I’ve never heard a Taylor Hicks song on the radio. I wonder what he’s doing now? It’s kinda sad that he’s just faded into oblivion. He was not my favorite from season 5 by any means but I did enjoy his performances during the Idol tour.

This may be old news to some but it’s new to me. I was just reading over at IdolBored.com and found this bit of scoop posted on their forums.

Apparently, Brian Miller auditioned last year and didnt make the cut. This year he is in the top 24… He’s the first one I’m going to watch since he is from OC!

What do you think? Cute, huh?

I remember him for sure and felt so bad for him when he didn’t make it. Definitely one to watch if you like the pretties. *wink*

“Extra” has your first glimpse at season seven of “American Idol,” with judges Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul revealing their biggest season secrets.

“This will be the strongest twelve we’ve ever had, and I’ve never, ever said that before,” Simon revealed.

And for once, they all seem to agree!

“We’ve never had a top twelve like we’re going to have this season,” admitted Paula.

Added Randy, “I think it’s the best we’ve ever had.”

But will “Idol” produce another Kelly Clarkson or Carrie Underwood this year?

“I’m going on record: There’s more than one,” Paula said.

Added Simon, “Yeah, Kelly, Carrie – all of them. I mean, very, very strong.”

With the competition even better, and the stakes higher, one thing remains the same: Paula and Simon’s disdain for each other.

The dynamic between the two is “atrocious as usual,” admitted Simon. “You know, Paula sees right, I see left. I mean, that’s what it’s like.”

Any arguments so far?

“Yeah, one or two,” Simon revealed.

Added Randy, “We fight a little bit…everyone gets frustrated. I understand. I get it.”
