Tonight the competition narrowed down from 24 to 20 as we said goodbye to 2 girls and 2 guys. The results didn’t come as a shock to me. I think America got it right, what about you?
The two girls who went home:
Amy Davis and JoAnne Borgella.
The two guys who went home:
Garrett Haley and Colton Berry

The second half of tonight’s show began with the lovely Alexandrea Lushington. I completely loved this girl in the auditions so I was excited to hear her again. She came out in what Paula described as a “dope” outfit and rocked out to “Spinning Wheel”. Her voice is great with only some slight issues in her upper register. The song arrangement was pretty neat. Randy and Paula love her and naturally, Simon “didn’t get it”.
Remember the chick who did all the voice impersonations at the auditions? We haven’t seen her since then so it was quite a surprise when Kady Malloy performed beautifully tonight. The judges didn’t seem to know what they were talking about on this one. Simon compared it to the night of the living dead and then goes as far as saying that a “pencil could impersonate” her! That was mean!
Asia’h Epperson did a rendition of Janis Joplin’s “Piece of my Heart” with a rock/hip-hop twist. Loved it!
Okay, remember tiny Ramiele Malubay with the great big voice? She NAILED it tonight. Her vocals, presence, attitude and look was just amazing. I had to agree with Simon when he said he wasn’t impressed at first but this definitely changes things!
Syesha Mercado put on yet another awesome performance. Mark my words – this girl is going to go far. She was simply outstanding and totally brought the house down at the end. Simon called her one of the most talented girls in the competition. He also added that she did “terrific” and “has the whole package”.
Lots of buzz went flying around about Carly Smithson especially after she wowed the judges during Hollywood Week. Tonight her vocals were strong but the poor gal struggled through some of the softer parts and had some straining mid-song. Unfortunately she has bronchitis and a cold. Randy still shows some love by calling her the best vocal in the whole top 24. Simon, on the other hand, wasn’t as thrilled.

Tonight the top 12 ladies gave it their best shot hoping to crack into the final 12. So let’s begin the rundown of the first half…
Kristy Lee Cook had a lot of buzz when we first saw her at the auditions. Tonight she opened the show with “Rescue Me” despite having the flu and bronchitis. Her sweet country voice was nice but nothing special. Paula gave props for toughing it out but the judges were not all that impressed.
Now JoAnne Borgella may remind you of Jordan Sparks, but in all honesty she just doesn’t compare. She sounded a little nervous, breathy and there was a bit of shrieking in certain spots.
Look out for Alaina Whitaker, America. This gorgeous gal gave an amazing performance. And even though Simon said he hated the song, he told her that if she can make a song like that sound good then she did well.
Amanda Overmeyer should have been right in her element performing a song from the Janis Joplin era, but something was kind of lacking on this one. I found her scatting to be pretty terrible at times and personally, the guitar solo sounded better than any of her vocal work. All that aside, Amanda is still a cool cat and the judges really dig her.
It will probably be a miracle if Amy Davis makes it to the top 12 finalists. Her performance was very pitchy and her voice cracked in a few places. It wasn’t the end of the world or anything, but it certainly wasn’t great. Even Paula called it “a little lackluster”.
Brooke White is 100% sweetheart. “Happy Together” was a great song choice; she sang it well. Simon calls her ‘too nice’ but I don’t think there is anything wrong with that!
