Last night, the guys sang their hearts out to 80s hits and tonight the top 8 girls showed off their stuff…

Asia’H Epperson looked cute tonight as she sang Whitney Houston’s “I Want To Dance With Somebody”. I thought it was a really nice performance. Randy called it “hot” and Simon said she is good enough to make the top 12.

Kady Malloy sounded downright manly tonight. Her pitch was a little bit funky in certain spots. Randy didn’t like it. Paula, again on drugs tonight said “for me this is your best performance.” Simon felt it was better than last week but he is still having issues with her “massive lack of personality.”

Amanda Overmeyer did a much better job this week than she has been doing lately. My only gripe is that it sounded like the background vocals were louder than she was. Almost as if the band was trying to cover up her voice so that she can stay in the competition! But that didn’t phase the judges who thought she did excellent tonight. Simon told her, “I thought you were fantastic.”

Carly Smithson doesn’t ‘wow’ me but I give the girl a lot of credit for such a nice performance tonight. She sounded good and all her big notes were right on the money. Randy told her, “Carly, you keep smashin’ it every week.” Paula got kind of off track and a little weird again by poking fun at Randy. Simon didn’t think she chose the right song. He told her that the song just didn’t give her the credit she deserves and that she is “a million times better than that song.”

Hmm. As you probably know, some of our American Idol stars have been in the news for stuff other than for AI. Now, I’m cool with what they’ve done.But there are some people who think that everyone should be “clean” or something…. Like they want to bring up stuff which they think is “bad” and “wrong”.Anyway, if you don’t know what I mean, then have a look at this.

 You see, several of this year’s American Idol contestants are involved in “scandal”.David Hernandez, Danny Noriega and Ramieles are supposed to have done something “bad”.Now, I don’t know why they say this, but I don’t see this as a “scandal”. I guess they must be doing it for ratings or something.Anyway, lets give them a chance. For more American Idol 7 news and stuff, bookmark our site today.

The second half of tonight’s show went about as well as the first.

Michael Johns is definitely beginning to wear on my nerves. The guy has a good voice but he really doesn’t know how to use it. He seems so focused on being theatrical during his performances that his vocals just get lost along the way. The only word I can use to describe him lately is “craptastic”. Tonight’s “Don’t You Forget About Me” was so over the top and dramatic and corny. He twirled the mic and did a lot of hand waving and shouting at the end. It just feels so overdone and lame. But what do I know? Randy said it was nicely done, Paula said he picked the perfect song and Simon liked it but didn’t love it.

Anyway, have a look for yourself;

Randy called David Cook’s cover of Lionel Richie’s “Hello” the “emo” version. He says it’s brilliant but I have to disagree yet again. David Cook seems to have the same syndrome that almost ALL of the guys are having this year and that is being way too over the top when it comes to performing. David has a nice voice and he’s even kind of cute, but there is something about him that screams “unbelievable” to me when I see him. I just don’t feel any real emotions when he sings and I think that’s been the problem all along. Although Paula said she loves him and Simon called his performance tonight a “very brave thing to do and I loved it”.

Jason Castro did an excellent job tonight – without his guitar! He tends to make some interesting faces while he’s singing but I just love hearing this kid’s voice. Randy gives props and calls it nice. Paula said he made the song sound effortless and showed his vulnerability. Then she managed to trail on for a while in her usual fashion. Simon said it was “absolutely brilliant” and complemented Jason for getting “better and better and better”.

Chikezie Eze had another moment with Simon tonight after his performance. He did a decent job but it didn’t blow me out of the water or anything. Randy said it was a tough song choice. Paula loved his vocals. And then Simon let him have it by asking if it was a Whitney Houston song. After that was established, Simon told him that it didn’t work for him at all.

Tonight was 80s night on American Idol for the top 8 guys.

Luke Menard should really just get a clue and get gone already. He actually went with Wham!’s “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go” which was just as bad as the original. This guy has absolutely no radio-quality whatsoever. He scooped up to one high note that just made me cringe. Randy said he was ahead of the song’s timing in parts and it was corny but alright. Paula was surprised that he chose that song and wondered why he didn’t come out in those legendary George Michael short shorts.

David Archuleta did yet another great job tonight with “Another Day in Paradise”. He played piano for the first half of the song which was awesome to see. Randy said it was an interesting song choice that didn’t show off all his vocals but it was nice. Paula calls him perfect. And Simon said he wasn’t as good as last week. Then he warned David to stay away from performing too many gloomy songs.

Danny Noriega keeps getting more annoying every week. I liked him at first but my opinion has slowly been changing each week (if you haven’t already noticed). His version of “Tainted Love” was a combination of rock and androgyny. Simon called it “completely useless” and hated it all. I can’t say I disagree. The judges were yacking away when Paula mentioned something totally off-subject about chicken wings. Seriously, what is she smoking?

I’m sure you’ve all heard the news by now that David Hernandez used to be a stripper in a gay club. Does anybody really find that surprising? The Idol folks say they are not going to disqualify him which doesn’t make much sense seeing as how others have been booted out before for having similar pasts.

Despite all that, David did a really dramatic performance of “It’s All Coming Back To Me” and all I could really think about was whether or not the song was a tribute to his stripper days. Paula made a few comments that I construed as a dig at the whole situation, “I feel like you’re getting into your groove here” and “you’re a really good performer”. Well naturally somebody who used to strip knows how to put on a good show!!

Anyway, here’s his performance;
