I’m sorry guys but Kristy Lee Cook just doesn’t do it for me. She’s a sweetie and all but come on now, she admitted to the camera, “I had my own dog bowl to drink from” and that is frankly kind of strange! Anyway, tonight her outfit was less than flattering – some old lady rags. But she took Simon’s advice and tried to go with a more country route. It is definitely her strong suit but not enough to blow anybody away. Some of the notes she reached for at the end were just painful to hear. She sure looks like a performer but her vocals just can’t cut it. Randy actually liked it because of the country twinge. Paula said it could be a radio hit for her but I just don’t see it. And Simon said it was good to hear the country influence but he still thinks she is forgettable. Agreed.
Ramiele Malubay started off singing beautifully and built the song up nicely. There weren’t any huge notes or anything but it was really nice all around. Randy told her, “you got mad vocals, come on with it” meaning she needs to pick some songs that will allow her to belt out all the good stuff. Paula talked about loving the “colors” and “textures” of her voice and then trailed off into being a total crackhead again. It was very awkward and she ate up a lot of camera time! Simon called the performance “very old fashioned”, a bit predictable and said he wasn’t “jumping out of [his] chair on that.”
My girl Brooke White did an awesome cover of Pat Benetar’s “Love Is A Battlefield”. She sat at the edge of the stage singing while the band played an acoustic arrangement of the song. She turned it into a slower, country ballad and I just loved it. Randy really liked it while Paula felt that the music should’ve been different. Simon dismissed Paula’s comments and like myself, loved her version.
Syesha Mercado was last to go tonight and as usual she looked and sounded lovely. Tonight she sang “Saving All My Love For You”. This girl’s definitely got a spot in the top 12.

Last night, the guys sang their hearts out to 80s hits and tonight the top 8 girls showed off their stuff…
Asia’H Epperson looked cute tonight as she sang Whitney Houston’s “I Want To Dance With Somebody”. I thought it was a really nice performance. Randy called it “hot” and Simon said she is good enough to make the top 12.
Kady Malloy sounded downright manly tonight. Her pitch was a little bit funky in certain spots. Randy didn’t like it. Paula, again on drugs tonight said “for me this is your best performance.” Simon felt it was better than last week but he is still having issues with her “massive lack of personality.”
Amanda Overmeyer did a much better job this week than she has been doing lately. My only gripe is that it sounded like the background vocals were louder than she was. Almost as if the band was trying to cover up her voice so that she can stay in the competition! But that didn’t phase the judges who thought she did excellent tonight. Simon told her, “I thought you were fantastic.”
Carly Smithson doesn’t ‘wow’ me but I give the girl a lot of credit for such a nice performance tonight. She sounded good and all her big notes were right on the money. Randy told her, “Carly, you keep smashin’ it every week.” Paula got kind of off track and a little weird again by poking fun at Randy. Simon didn’t think she chose the right song. He told her that the song just didn’t give her the credit she deserves and that she is “a million times better than that song.”

Tonight was 80s night on American Idol for the top 8 guys.
Luke Menard should really just get a clue and get gone already. He actually went with Wham!’s “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go” which was just as bad as the original. This guy has absolutely no radio-quality whatsoever. He scooped up to one high note that just made me cringe. Randy said he was ahead of the song’s timing in parts and it was corny but alright. Paula was surprised that he chose that song and wondered why he didn’t come out in those legendary George Michael short shorts.
David Archuleta did yet another great job tonight with “Another Day in Paradise”. He played piano for the first half of the song which was awesome to see. Randy said it was an interesting song choice that didn’t show off all his vocals but it was nice. Paula calls him perfect. And Simon said he wasn’t as good as last week. Then he warned David to stay away from performing too many gloomy songs.
Danny Noriega keeps getting more annoying every week. I liked him at first but my opinion has slowly been changing each week (if you haven’t already noticed). His version of “Tainted Love” was a combination of rock and androgyny. Simon called it “completely useless” and hated it all. I can’t say I disagree. The judges were yacking away when Paula mentioned something totally off-subject about chicken wings. Seriously, what is she smoking?
I’m sure you’ve all heard the news by now that David Hernandez used to be a stripper in a gay club. Does anybody really find that surprising? The Idol folks say they are not going to disqualify him which doesn’t make much sense seeing as how others have been booted out before for having similar pasts.
Despite all that, David did a really dramatic performance of “It’s All Coming Back To Me” and all I could really think about was whether or not the song was a tribute to his stripper days. Paula made a few comments that I construed as a dig at the whole situation, “I feel like you’re getting into your groove here” and “you’re a really good performer”. Well naturally somebody who used to strip knows how to put on a good show!!
Anyway, here’s his performance;

As you probably know, Brooke White is cute.
… Real cute!
Anyway, she also has a really cute voice. She sort of reminds me like jewel or something. Although bubblier or something. Now it is a great song choice for her. And the judges agree too.
Anyway, she has this cute look she gives everyone. And if you didn’t get the chance to watch her, have a look at this.

Was the second half of the show any better? Not really.
Amanda Overmeyer made a huge mistake tonight singing “Carry On Wayward Son” by Kansas. Her hair looked like something out of the Addams Family but I will give her credit on the cool pants. Her vocals were just horrible. She sounded out of breath in some parts trying to strain and hold the notes out. When she finished she didn’t seem too happy about it. Randy told her she picked the wrong song. Paula tells her that she can dance. Too bad it’s not a dancing competition, huh? Simon said he “really really didn’t get that.”
Alaina Whitaker did a pretty lame job of singing the classic Olivia Newton John hit “Hopelessly Devoted To You”. There was a bit of shouting at the end and Randy was dead on the money when he pointed out how pitchy and sharp she was throughout the whole song. Simon can’t believe how old fashioned she was, “it’s like your grandmother prepared you for this audition.”
So much for liking Alexandrea Lushington. I don’t even know what song she chose but it was bad all around. Randy told her she played it way too safe. Simon said he was a big fan of hers but it appears as if she is struggling now. He called her inconsistent, uncomfortable and boring. It looks like her nerves are getting the best of her. I hope she improves soon.
Kady Malloy did a completely dreadful rendition of Heart’s “Magic Man”. All three judges did not like her performance. Simon told her she was trying too hard to be like Christina Aguilera. She needs to work on being herself and focusing on her vocals rather than trying to look sexy.
Asia’h Epperson did a pretty decent job of “All By Myself”. For one thing, she looked fantastic. Judging on the song’s difficulty, Randy said she did a good job of it. He really liked the ending but I was kind of hoping for a little bit more power at the end. Still, a good effort. Simon flat out told her she is not that good of a singer and the song showed her up. He called Asia’h’s song choice a “silly decision”.
I don’t know ladies and gentleman… I think the boys are way more talented than the girls this year.

Tonight the top 10 ladies showed off their 70’s stuff.
Carly Smithson did Heart’s “Crazy On You” and it was good but Simon said she really needs to choose a song that showcases her talents a little better. He calls her the girl to beat in the competition.
The lovely Syesha Mercado looked and sounded wonderful tonight but the judges didn’t like her choice of song.
There is something about Brooke White that just seems so sweet and genuine. Tonight she went with Carly Simon’s “You’re So Vain” and brought her guitar on stage with her. It’s not like she is an amazing vocalist or anything but she is very talented. Randy and Paula loved her choice of song and as for Simon? - “Okay, Brooke I absolutely loved it!”
Ramiele Malubay did a nice job tonight but it wasn’t enough to impress the judges like last week. Randy called it okay vocally, but not as good as last week. Paula said the song didn’t show her voice off and Simon actually agrees with Paula. He calls her one of the top 3 singers in the competition but that song wasn’t her best.
Contrary to what everybody believed during the auditions, Kristy Lee Cook just doesn’t seem to have what it takes. I didn’t like her performance at all tonight. Her vocals were even scratchy and verging on shouting towards the end. Randy said it was a 100% improvement from last week and he liked it. Paula tells her that she’s back. Simon tells her she needs to figure out who she is as a singer by sticking to a more country sound.
Hmmm… I don’t know about you but I wasn’t all that impressed with these girls. Stay tuned for the 2nd half coming up shortly.

Now for the second half of tonight’s show…
David Hernandez did a fantastic version of “Papa Was A Rolling Stone”. He came out with attitude and personality and performed the hell out of it. Randy praises him by saying “that’s how to put it down. That was hot.”, Paula calls it “perfect” and Simon says, “in my opinion that was the best vocal of the night so far.”
Dear Jason Yeager,
You are a great guy. But please go back to your day job as a singing waiter. Your performance was a total karaoke sensation. Paula said your song didn’t show off your range. Simon called you “awkward and ordinary… Like you were drunk at a party” at the end. Dude… I’m pretty sure you should start packing your bags.
Sincerely,
AmericanIdol7Blog
Chikezie Eze left his pimp suit at home tonight and decided to come back in casual wear. Loved his performance tonight. Randy called it “blazin’”, Paula said it was “brilliant” and as for Simon? Well first he can’t get the guy’s name right so he decides to call him “Chi”. Says it was a clever choice of song and a million times better than last week.
David Cook is still trying hard but not quite hitting the mark. He comes out playing guitar this week and while I want to like him so bad, something just doesn’t do it for me. David was all about the performance and not so much the vocal. Something is seriously lacking.
American Idol clearly saved the best for last tonight. (Yes, I am being totally biased here. Sue me!) David Archuletta brought the house down with a gorgeous, heartfelt performance of the John Lennon classic “Imagine”. David does his own unique version and it is spectacular! To quote Randy, “that’s one of the best vocals I’ve ever heard on this show.” Paula confesses her love by telling David she wants to squeeze him and “dangle [him] from my rearview mirror”. Simon said it was very risky… and right now David is the one to beat. My gut tells me that he is going to win this year.

Tonight American Idol is down to the top 10 guys. The theme? Classic ’70s. Let’s see how they did.
First up, Michael Johns busted out the Fleetwood Mac and did a pretty good job of it. He sounded good and brought a lot of energy although it was a little dramatic towards the end. Randy and Paula thought he did a good job. Simon called it okay but pointed out that it was his worst performance thus far.
Before getting on stage, we learned that Jason Castro does not like to do interviews. It seems he just doesn’t know how to act if he isn’t performing. Tonight he sang along with his guitar again and it was really beautiful besides being a little off pitch towards the end. Randy says the vocals are just okay and Paula thinks he’s cute. At least Paula wasn’t drunk this time around. She tells him to sing without the guitar next week. Simon calls it a “schmoltzy” effort.
Side note: Am I the only one who thinks Jason Castro looks exactly like a young John Travolta with dreadlocks?
Luke Menard’s performance tonight was a complete and total disaster in my opinion. Freddie Mercury is probably rolling over in his grave over Luke’s terrible rendition of “Killer Queen”. You may has well of called it “Killing Queen” because that’s just what he did. His voice was high pitched and strange, he was making weird faces and it was just creepy all the way around. Paula said it was the perfect song… umm, okay so maybe she WAS drunk after all! Simon got it right by calling it whiny and theatrical.
Robbie Carrico just didn’t do it for me tonight. His song was corny and very karaoke-esque. While Randy was not too happy with it, Paula defended him and politely told him he played it safe.
Did you know that Danny Noriega was in a punk rock band?? Tonight he sang a popular number from the Carpenters. You know, this kid is so obnoxious but he really does have a good voice. He showed off his lower range and I thought it was pretty darn good. Randy told him he needs to let himself go and stop concentrating so hard. Simon told him he looked terrific on camera and had a much better performance than last week.

Tonight the competition narrowed down from 24 to 20 as we said goodbye to 2 girls and 2 guys. The results didn’t come as a shock to me. I think America got it right, what about you?
The two girls who went home:
Amy Davis and JoAnne Borgella.
The two guys who went home:
Garrett Haley and Colton Berry
